Series 3 of the popular ITV period drama may have ended, but we’ve put together some great ideas to help you through the wait for series 4.
We’d all like to live in Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey set) or a beautiful British manor house, but as for many of us this just isn’t possible, we’ve got some great design tips to give your home a touch of traditional class…..
- Architectural Style: If you don’t have a period property, adding character to your home can be easier than you think. It could be as simple as adding traditional doorknobs or, if you really want to give your home a full make-over, incorporating period skirting boards and mouldings. Set in the post-Edwardian era, Downton Abbey really captures the essence of traditional British design, so watching the show will give you some great ideas. Alternatively, why not visit your local castle or period hotel to get a real-time feel for the era you’re trying to recreate?
- Decorating: Wallpaper was extremely popular in this era and often included light tones and damask patterns for an elegant look. However, in smaller homes wallpaper can often look heavy and enclose a room. A simple way to create an early 20th century look is to add vintage paintings and mirrors and inject metallic gold for a classy feel.
- Furnishing: Forget the modern ‘less is more’ rule, in Downton Abbey more is more! Visit vintage stores, charity shops and auctions to find unique pieces like harlequin sofas, footstools and vintage coffee tables. To really make your home look like a palace, spray paint wooden furniture in gold and add chandeliers, traditional Elizabeth lamps and candles for an extravagant, yet cosy feel during the evenings. Traditional, hardwearing suitcases are ideal storage pieces and make great side tables when stacked up, whilst tea sets and cake stands add a homely British feel when kept on display.
The great thing about many period styles is that your furniture doesn’t have to match and you can collect signature pieces over time to take the stress out of decorating.
